Event - Safer Internet Day

11 February 2025

Children were immersed in learning centred around Safer Internet Day.

Safer Internet Day is a day in February where organisations across 170 different countries come together to help make the internet a safer and better place for everyone.

This year’s theme was ‘Too good to be true? Protecting yourselves and others from scams online.’

The day started with Years 1-6 gathering in the hall for a special Safer Internet Day Assembly. Here the theme was introduced and we got the chance to discuss what a scam is, what it looks like and how to avoid being scammed. Most importantly we highlighted that St. Margaret Mary is a telling school and if we are ever worried about anything we see online, there are trusted adults that are here to listen and support us.

The children then split off in to their classes for a variety of activities linked with Safer Internet Day. The children focused on objectives from their ‘Managing online information unit’ which looks at the information we can see online and how it is not always reliable.

In EYFS, the children discussed their favourite things to do online and who they can tell if they feel worried or upset by something the see online.

In KS1, children explored different ways to access the online world and looked at how search engines work by typing in keywords.

In LKS2, children explored the idea of ‘falling down the rabbit hole’ in terms of binge-watching online videos. We identified how these videos are peoples’ opinions and are not always factual. We mad posters to give out top tips for avoiding the rabbit hole!

In UKS2, children acted as fake news spotters – spotting made up stories online. They then designed posters for how to stop the spreading of fake news.

It was great to see the children so involved in their learning today!
